Monthly Favs & Fails, March edition

new videoJasna Bronić MiklinComment

I love it when a plan comes together.

Unfortunately, that wasn't the case today. There was another video planned, but I decided not to rush it, so I rushed a MFF instead. 'Cause nobody cares if that one is rushed.

B-School started and I severely underestimated how much time it would take me to go through all of the lessons for this week. And I did make the lessons my priority. So the videos had to suffer. I'm hoping to get back on track next week, but, again, no promises. The long-term goals I have envisioned for the BrickoMotion brand are more important than an individual video.

The only first for this video would be that I had filmed some footage for it in advance.

I forgot to mention in the firsts for the previous video (10 Best Hairstyles): that was the first time I used my brick build letters as the background. It was easy to make and looked nice. I will definitely use that trick again.

Top 10 LEGO Hairstyles

new video, general updateJasna Bronić MiklinComment

All hail The LEGO Movies!

For, were it not for The LEGO Movie, The LEGO Batman Movie, and The LEGO Ninjago Movie, this list wouldn't be half as good.

Other great sources for the best hair pieces include LEGO Elves, Disney Princess, and CMFs.

I'm really happy with this video. Yet again, I had to work for 14h on a Saturday to complete it, but it was worth it. Even as I was editing, I thought to myself: "this is coming together quite nicely" which is a thing I never think while editing. I mostly just hate everything until it's done.

This video is an experiment. Can I produce a quality Top 10 list? I think I have. Will it be popular? We will see.

The only first for this video is that it's a Top 10 list. But that doesn't mean everything was same old, same old - I have improved my speaking and video editing significantly.

I have also made myself a Trello list to keep track of what I still need to do regarding a video. It's baffling to me how I managed to do anything without this list before. I mean, I know how. I didn't do half the things I was supposed to.

Oh! And I made an Instagram account several weeks ago. My name was free so I took it and now you can find brickomotion on Instagram as well. I hope to post "spoilers" of upcoming videos on there, or at least something I find clever or funny :)

I'll try to publish a video (almost) every weekend for the next 2-3 months, but I'm not very hopeful. I enrolled in an online business school and we might be moving soon again. And then there are the doctor's appointments.. so many doctors.. It's nothing serious, but it sucks the life energy right out of me just thinking about it.

Nevertheless, the video is out. In the 2h it's out, it got over 5000 views and many many positive comments. I love my viewers. Off to happy sleep I go.

Ariel's Underwater Family

new videoJasna Bronić MiklinComment

I decided there's no such thing as too many mermaids.

And good thing I have. I like the idea of this video, it's realization and results. It got around 60k views in the first 48 hours which is a great thing!

And I don't seem to have made any obvious mistakes :D

This is the first video:

  • which is based on mermaid characters
  • which I finished while visiting my friends (in Innsbruck)
  • where I painted a crown and hair bands

I changed the hair pieces I was going to use for the mermaids several times. I was torn between making them as realistic as possible and using the hair piece that suit's the mini the best. I ended up using a mix of those two approaches and I think it turned out well.

So now, not only is the mermaid year looking strong - I've started the princess dollify thing as well. I'm so excided for everything that is still to come!

Harley Quinn's Outfits

new videoJasna Bronić MiklinComment

I planned this video for the Summer. Of last year.

Needless to say that I obviously needed quite a few months more to make it happen. Why now? 'Cause the Friends line came out with a new character Vicky. She has black sporty pants with red sneakers and the greatest facial expression LEGO has produced so far.

Those two things screamed Harley to me and I had to finally finish the video.

What's new for this video?

  • I had only a script draft, but I don't sound lost on the recording
  • I've introduced a new "style" of thumbnails (characters have a black border around them to increase their visibility) that I might roll out to some older videos as well
  • The editing process was super fast, due to me being more experienced and having settled for a slower pace of the video (gotta break that 10 min mark!)

Fun Fact: I have worked over 14h this Saturday to get this video published.

Stickers & Capes

new videoJasna Bronić MiklinComment

With sparkles & shine.

It was supposed to be a short, quickly filmed & edited video. Then, once again, I decided to make my life more complicated.

I figured, there's no point in just showing you the capes - the minis need to wear them. And the stickers need to embellish the bricks. So, the filming process took longer. Not "painting the whole Doctor Who cast" longer, but longer nevertheless.

This was the first time I:

  • Spoke while filming in the lightbox
  • Showed an organized collection and what I use the pieces for
  • Made a 15+ minute video
  • Put an additional add in the middle and on the end of the video

Currently, I'm visiting friends & family and running some errands in Croatia. That means there will be no video this week and that's the reason this blog post is so late.

Greetings from Croatia! May you not be as exhausted as I am.

Face reveal!

new videoJasna Bronić Miklin2 Comments

Because not even I knew what my face looked like!

I don't get the YouTube craze about face reveals, but I needed a video ASAP so this is what you got.

I'm going to Croatia with the kids for a week and I didn't want the channel to suffer so I planned ahead. Maybe a bit too much, seeing as I made more progress on the future videos than on the immediate one.

All of this means that we are entering a short era of "quickly" made videos. Just so I could get some paperwork done and see friends & family.

Despite the rush to make this video, I've incorporated some firsts into it:

  • set "reviews"
  • how we play with the sets
  • I talked to the camera while filming - no extra audio editing

The most pointless video ever

new videoJasna Bronić MiklinComment

And people still love it.

Well, not everyone likes it, but that wasn't the goal. I wanted to experiment. I already know there's an audience for dollifying stuff, but is there an audience for mermifying stuff?

Apparently, there is. And that makes me happy :)

A few firsts I did in the making of this video:

  • paint a fish
  • talk into the microphone without a script and sound somewhat coherent
  • tried to talk more about the mermify process and tell a little story about every character

So now finally, I can declare the Year of the Mermaids has officially begun on the BrickoMotion channel! YouTube Gods, please let it be a successful one!

Btw The last SW video got monetized after the manual review. Hurray! That makes the manual review correct in 2 out of 3 cases. At least for me. Yay!

Chaosville the board game

new videoJasna Bronić MiklinComment

I can't link directly to LEGO Ideas from YouTube, so I figured I'll link to this site first. And then to the project:

To be exact, I can link to it from the comments and the descriptions, it's just the cards and the end screen that have the issues. I think it's because LEGO Ideas isn't exactly a crowdfunding site. Oh well. Maybe this will work as well.

Since I submitted Chaosville to the LEGO Ideas platform, I have been in a constant fight or flight state. I don't like it. I can't sleep, I can't relax, it's constantly on my mind. I'm hoping that when I publish the video, the feeling will soften up. It has to. I can't live like this forever.

I have a feeling this is not going to be the only Chaosville post on this site :)

Chaosville made me do all of this for the first time:

  • design a LEGO board game
  • upload a project to LEGO Ideas
  • present a board game
  • apply custom stickers to LEGO pieces (for the dice)
  • design the stickers

SW: A New Dollify

new videoJasna Bronić MiklinComment

It happened again.

I'm exhausted. Again I make a fairly popular dollify video and several hours after it's uploaded YouTube puts it on the naughty list.

I don't like that. I don't like that one bit.

Maybe this time the manual review comes back saying it is advertiser friendly, maybe it doesn't. Who knows?

Either way, I'm left with a feeling of "I can't count on AdSense revenue". And that's my only revenue.

I guess I have to speed up the LEGO Ideas and the Patreon project.

This advertiser unfriendliness has got me on a rant I didn't want to have. Let's get back to the planned content of this post.

Things I did for the first time for or in this video:

  • lengthen a minidoll torso with green stuff
  • modify a minidoll head piece with green stuff
  • paint fur
  • paint 3 more or less identical legs and torso pieces
  • tease a related video (mermaids) and then decide if I should do it via the poll in the community tab

That is a lot of firsts. And all of that work so it can get demonetized.

I'm too cranky and sad to write this post now. Maybe I revisit it when I cool off.

December Favourites & Fails

new videoJasna Bronić MiklinComment

I lost the spark to create videos.

Luckily, it was only temporary. Sort of.

I wasn't in a big hurry to finish the SW video and I had a lot of fun hanging out with my kids. I missed them a bit. That is how I decided it's time for another Monthly Favourites video.

But it wouldn't be the complete picture if I didn't talk about my fails as well.

You see, I'm a human that has feelings and makes mistakes. And December was just a big bowl of "nothing went according to plan and I have no idea what I am doing and how do I get out of this mess". Nothing life-threatening, but very very emotionally draining. Add that to the 2 ongoing years of chaos we had and you get an emotionally overwhelmed Mrs. Brickomotion.

I hope to "recharge" during these holidays and attack the next year head on ;D
